How to get a good deal on the PlayStation 5 Slim

When the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020 to a gigantic amount of fanfare, it became one of the most popular gaming releases to date – so much so that it was like the Hunger Games to get your hands on one. While the hype has simmered down, the console itself is slimming down too.
Released in Australia on December 6, 2023, the PlayStation 5 Slim is the new-look PS5 that is set to replace the original, larger model. Here is everything you need to know about the PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition.
NOTE: Prices are accurate at time of publishing.
The PlayStation 5 Slim was announced in October 2023 and is the newest PlayStation console to be released by Sony. It is the same as the PlayStation 5 we know and love but significantly smaller.
Included with the PS5 Slim is a horizontal stand to safely lay the console down flat. A vertical stand that stands your console upright can be purchased separately.
The PlayStation 5 Slim was released in Australia on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, following the November release in the US.
You can buy the PlayStation 5 Slim now for the discounted price of $675 (originally $799.95) or the Digital Edition on sale for $575 (originally $679.95).
The Digital Edition Bundle is also selling for $999.99 and the bundle DualSense pack for $1199.99.
In December 2024, Sony celebrate 30 years of the PlayStation console. To commemorate the milestone, they’ve released a commemorative, limited edition PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Console.
This version features all the perks of the current PlayStation 5 Slim Digital console but has the classic grey colour scheme and accessories of the original release.
The bundle pack includes:
You can pre-order your PlayStation 5 Digital 30th Anniversary Limited Edition console now for $724 on Amazon.
PlayStation purists may remember the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro and its huge increase in resolution and power compared to the PlayStation 4 – these huge alternations between consoles are not the case with the PlayStation 5 Slim.
The PlayStation 5 Slim retains the majority of features with the PlayStation 5. However, there have been some improvements made to make this console more irresistible to gamers than its predecessor.
The biggest and most notable difference is the size between the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Slim. The physical console size of the PlayStation 5 Slim is 30 per cent smaller than the PlayStation 5 as well as 18 per cent lighter. Similarly, the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition shares a 30 per cent size decrease from the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and is 24 per cent lighter.
While this size decrease is a significant difference and improvement to the PS5, it is still a large-sized console compared to its major competitor: the Xbox Series X.
The DualSense controllers used to play the PS5 remain the same size.
Another physical difference is the cover panels. The original PS5 had two cover panels on either side. The PlayStation 5 Slim has four separate cover panels to mix and match the look of your console. The top panels have a glossy look while the bottom has a matte finish.
While the physical size has decreased, it doesn’t make it any less playable – in fact, it is the opposite. The storage capacity for the PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition has been increased to 1TB compared to the PlayStation 5’s 825GB.
The horsepower for the PS5 Slim remains the same so your game’s resolution and quality will be just as good.
When the PlayStation 5 was initially released, a big talking point was the Digital Edition not being able to play physical copies of games.
While this is the same with the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition, you can buy an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately and add it to your PS5 Slim Digital Edition to make it compatible with physical games.
If the new additions haven’t convinced you, then you’ve only got a short time left to buy an original PS5 instead of the PS5 Slim.
The PlayStation 5 Slim will be replacing the current PlayStation 5 console once the current inventory is depleted, making it the new go-to PlayStation 5. But with the changes in size, storage and look, the PlayStation 5 Slim overleaps the PlayStation 5 and is the way to go if you’re looking for a new gaming console.
